  • Why I choose 3G over Wi-Fi

Marguerite Reardon, Why I choose 3G over Wi-Fi:

Say what you will about the wireless phone companies, but in a crunch their managed 3G cellular networks get the job done when Wi-Fi connections fail.

I have consistently found that Rogers’ 3G network, either over USB or tethered via my iPhone, significantly outperforms Wi-Fi in most public places I visit around Toronto.

A couple of years ago, I used to happily pay for Wi-Fi hotspot access with services like Boingo et al, but I reached the point last year where signing up for a separate 3G “Rocket Stick” with Rogers was more economical and efficient than trying to hop onto Wi-Fi in the various places I land when on-the-go. Now, with Rogers bundling iPhone 3G data tethering (for now), it makes even more sense.
